How old are they supposed to be in S1?

The whole family? I believe Al is supposed to be just over 40, as Ed O'Neill was IRL. Peggy must be in the same age, of course. Bud is 12-13 years old (he turned 18 in season six, five years after season one) while Kelly is, if I'm not mistaken, two years older.

What I didn't get was that Bud said he was in "fifth grade" back in season 1 (Have You Driven A Ford Lately) which would make him 10. In A Taxing Problem, he was 15, David Faustino's real age at the time.
Kelly and Bud are about a year and a half apart, Bud is one year behind Kelly in high school.

Hmm, writers slip ups perhaps?

Yeah, it happens all the time and not even the greatest sitcom in the history of television is an exception.

Continuity is a sitcom's worst enemy. :)
