Dear Petros!

At the first 4 seasons the loughs had been mixed up into the episode.

From the 5th season on there was an real audience at the taping!

You know, I've often wondered how that worked. Did they film it all in one take? Hard to laugh at something the same way once you've seen it already. The other thing is, sometimes the comic bit only comes when the camera pans up to something, how does the audience know to wait to laugh for that?

The taping in front of the audience was done in one session.
I've no idea if the had signs on the top that said "laugh now!" or something (but from the things I know from the set there haven't been any signs).
There has been a person for warm up und such things.

But the audience of course saw a bit more than we see on screen. So they knew already Al would be entering the door since they saw him on the other side of the wall.

And afterall maybe the mixed some extra laughts to the final cut.

Studio audiences also have screens to watch the show on, because they can't see absolutley everything, so some things would have been reacted to genuinely like it is on TV...
Also, the audiences are warmed up (and in MWC's case, liquored up) and told to laugh at the same things if a re-take is done.

That all makes a lot of sense.

Man, wouldn't it have been great to be there? We would haved cheered like crazy.

I know, I wish I could back in time... and you know, had the money to travel to the other side of the world at will.

WHAT?!

Are you telling me that the first four seasons didn't have an audience, that it wasn't taped in front of a live audience??

That would habe been so much fun being in there on the set of the actual Bundy house, cheering whenever someone entered the scene and hooted whenever Peg and Kelly walked in the door :D

I had absolutely no idea, guys. I don't think it's even mentioned on Bundyology. If it is then I just must have forgotten all about it. This shocked me quite a bit.

Did they have to move to a new set or build their current one bigger so that an audience could fit? Seems weird if they did all those episodes in front of empty seats for those first years and didn't start using them until the 5th season.
